The Rainbow River in Colombia
Colombia’s Liquid Rainbow: The River of Five Colors. This is Caño Cristales. CNN called it Colombia’s “liquid rainbow.” Locals call it “the river that ran away from paradise.” It is one of the most visually extraordinary places we take travelers in Colombia, and one of the least known outside the country.
6 Hours
Caño Cristales Jungle
A shaded, forested stretch of the same river. Cooler, quieter, and visually different, here the plant forms a dense green carpet instead of red.
8 Hours
Caño Cristales de Colores
The upper stretch of river, where an open canopy lets in the most sunlight and the Macarenia clavigera plant turns its deepest, most photographed red. Includes boat transfer, 4×4, and hike to the river.

Best Time To Visit Caño Cristales
Caño Cristales actually offers two distinct experiences depending on when you go, it’s not just about color.
- Color Season (June 15 – November 15): the Macarenia clavigera plant blooms and the riverbed turns red, yellow, green, and blue. July through September tends to bring the most stable weather and the most vivid color. This is the classic “rainbow river” experience.
- Dry Season (December 1 – March 31): the river itself isn’t colorful, but falling water levels open up Ciudad de Piedra and the Angosturas Canyon, two dramatic rock landscapes that are inaccessible the rest of the year.
- April–May: a transition window when the park is generally closed to allow the ecosystem to recover.
Most international travelers come for Color Season, and we’d recommend it for a first visit. But if you’ve already seen the rainbow river, or simply prefer dramatic rock formations and quieter trails, Dry Season is a compelling, very different trip.
We build every itinerary around whichever window fits your travel dates and interests.
