Arriving in a new country is usually straightforward until you don’t know what to expect.
Where do you go after landing? How long will immigration take? Can you use the biometric gates? Should you exchange money at the airport? Where should your driver meet you? What happens if you have a long layover in Bogotá? And how do you get online if you need to contact someone as soon as you land?
At Circling Colombia, we regularly welcome international travelers at Bogotá’s El Dorado International Airport. Over time, we’ve learned that some of the most useful information for first-time visitors isn’t necessarily found in a standard list of entry requirements.
This guide combines the official basics you need to know before traveling to Colombia with practical advice about what actually happens when you arrive and some of the small details that can make your first hour in the country considerably easier.

1. Before You Travel: Colombia Entry Requirements
Before booking your flight, make sure you understand the entry requirements that apply to your nationality.
Do U.S. citizens need a visa for Colombia?
U.S. citizens generally do not need a tourist visa for short visits to Colombia, although immigration officers determine the period of authorized stay upon arrival.
Your passport must be valid and in good physical condition, and you should have the documentation required for your particular trip.
Do Canadian citizens need a visa for Colombia?
Canadian citizens generally do not need a tourist visa for short visits to Colombia. However, they are subject to a COP $270,000 reciprocity fee per entry in 2026. This is not a visa and is normally paid as part of the immigration process when you arrive in Colombia. Payment can be made electronically, including by credit or debit card.
Canadian travelers are also directed to a separate immigration line, so don’t automatically join the general queue. Follow the signs for Canadian passport holders or ask airport staff where to go.
Do European citizens need a visa for Colombia?
Many European passport holders can enter Colombia for tourism without obtaining a visa in advance. However, Europe is not a single immigration category, so requirements can vary according to nationality.
Always check the current requirements for your specific passport before traveling.
Your passport needs to be in good condition
Don’t only check your passport’s expiration date.
Immigration authorities may have problems accepting a passport that is significantly damaged. Torn pages, detached pages, illegible information or other serious physical damage can cause complications at border control.
Before your trip, inspect your passport carefully.
2. Traveling to Colombia With Children
Traveling with children requires a little more preparation.
If a minor is traveling without one of their parents, additional authorization from the absent parent may be required.
In situations where only one parent is traveling with a child, make sure you have the appropriate documentation before leaving your home country. Depending on the child’s nationality, residence and circumstances, the requirements can differ.
Don’t leave this until the day of your flight.
If you are unsure whether a notarized authorization or additional documentation is required for your particular situation, verify it with the relevant Colombian authorities before traveling.
3. What to Know Before You Arrive
Is English widely spoken in Colombia?
Colombia is a Spanish-speaking country, and you should not assume that everyone you meet will speak English.
International hotels, tourism companies, airports and tourist-oriented businesses often have English-speaking staff, but English proficiency varies considerably throughout the country.
Outside the main tourist areas, you may encounter people who speak little or no English.
A few simple preparations can make your arrival much easier:
- Save your hotel name and address on your phone.
- Keep important addresses written down.
- Download an offline translation tool.
- Learn a few basic Spanish phrases.
- Keep your driver’s or local host’s contact information easily accessible.
You don’t need to speak Spanish fluently to travel through Colombia. But knowing a few words and being prepared for situations where English isn’t available can make a significant difference.
Will I have internet when I land in Bogotá?
Yes. El Dorado offers free Wi-Fi for passengers.
You need to register to connect, but once you’re online, you can use messaging services and other applications without immediately needing a Colombian SIM card.
This can be particularly useful during your first few minutes in the country.
If someone is meeting you at the airport, you can connect to the airport Wi-Fi while you are still going through immigration or collecting your luggage.
At Circling Colombia, we provide travelers with the contact information of the person receiving them. This means you don’t have to wait until you physically leave the terminal to establish contact.
You can message your driver or local host:
“I’ve arrived.”
Or:
“I’m still in immigration.”
That simple communication can make an unfamiliar airport feel considerably easier to navigate.
Should you exchange money at Bogotá Airport?
Our recommendation is simple:
Don’t exchange a large amount of foreign currency at the airport.
There are currency exchange offices at and around the airport, but convenience doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll receive the best exchange rate.
If you need Colombian pesos immediately, withdrawing a small amount from an ATM can be a practical alternative.
You can then deal with your remaining currency needs once you’re in Bogotá, where you’ll have more options.
Are ATMs a good way to get Colombian pesos?
Yes.
In our experience, using an ATM can be a convenient and reasonably efficient way to obtain Colombian pesos.
Before confirming a withdrawal, pay attention to:
- the ATM fee;
- the exchange rate;
- any additional charges;
- whether the machine is offering to convert the transaction into your home currency.
Always read the information displayed on the screen before accepting the transaction.
You don’t necessarily need to arrive in Colombia carrying a large amount of cash.
Do you need a yellow fever vaccination?
This depends on your itinerary and the areas you plan to visit.
A yellow fever vaccine is not a universal requirement for every traveler entering Colombia. Requirements and health recommendations can depend on where you are traveling from and where you will travel within Colombia.
If yellow fever is relevant to your itinerary, check the current health requirements before departure.
El Dorado also has a vaccination service where travelers can obtain a yellow fever vaccine.
4. Arriving at Bogotá’s El Dorado Airport
Most international travelers entering Colombia through Bogotá will arrive at El Dorado International Airport.
For an airport that handles a very large number of passengers, one of the things we particularly like about El Dorado is how efficiently people can move through the main terminal. It is busy, but it doesn’t necessarily feel complicated. Unlike some very large airports in the United States or Europe, where getting from one part of the airport to another can involve trains, shuttles or long transfers between terminals, the main El Dorado terminal is relatively straightforward to navigate.
The basic international arrival process is:
Arrival → Immigration → Baggage Claim → Customs → Arrivals
For a first-time visitor, that sequence is usually easy to understand once you know what to expect.
5. Immigration: The Part That Can Take the Longest
The amount of time you spend at the airport after landing depends heavily on how many international flights arrive around the same time. When there are relatively few international arrivals, you may be outside the airport in roughly 45 minutes. During busier periods, immigration can take around one hour. And when several flights arrive together, 90 minutes or more is possible. This is why we recommend being patient and avoiding tight connections immediately after an international arrival. If you have someone waiting for you, don’t worry if you are not outside at the expected time. Your driver or local host should already know that immigration times can vary.
Canadian travelers may have a dedicated line
Canadian travelers have an important advantage at El Dorado.
There is a dedicated immigration line for Canadian travelers, which can make the process considerably faster than joining the general international queue.
Don’t simply follow the longest line you see.
Look for the appropriate signage or ask airport personnel whether there is a dedicated line for Canadian passport holders.
Can foreign travelers use Bogotá’s biometric immigration gates?
Having a biometric passport does not automatically mean you can use the automated immigration gates. Foreign travelers should follow the immigration process applicable to their passport and nationality.
What happens after immigration?
Once you clear immigration, you proceed to baggage claim. After collecting your luggage, you proceed through customs and into the arrivals area. At this point, you’ll encounter transportation services, people waiting for passengers, restaurants, shops and other airport services. If you’re traveling with a private transfer, this is also the point where knowing your meeting location becomes important.
6. Understanding El Dorado Airport
One of the easiest ways to understand the main terminal is to think of it as a relatively simple vertical layout rather than a maze of disconnected terminals.
First floor: arrivals
The first floor is where international passengers arrive after entering Colombia.
This is also where you will eventually find the main arrivals areas and meet transportation.
Second floor: departures
The second floor is primarily used by passengers leaving Bogotá.
Each floor has numbered entrances, which makes it easier to use a specific door as a reference point when arranging a meeting.
What about the third floor?
There is also a third level, which is mainly associated with restaurants and food services. For most international arrivals, however, it isn’t particularly important to know about this level. The important thing is understanding where you are arriving, which door you are using and where your transportation is meeting you.
Which doors do international passengers use?
International passengers arriving in Bogotá commonly exit through the areas around Doors 5 and 7.
If someone is picking you up at the airport, however, the exact meeting point matters.
A local tip for airport pickups
The areas around Door 3 or Door 8 can sometimes be more practical for private pickups because they can be less congested than the busiest central areas.
This doesn’t mean that every pickup should take place at one of these doors. Airport traffic patterns and access can change.
The important point is to confirm the exact meeting point with your driver before leaving the terminal.
This is one of those small details that can save considerable confusion when dozens of people are arriving at the same time.
Door 5 is particularly useful
Door 5 is an important reference point for international travelers because several useful services are located in this area, including:
- international passenger services;
- tax-refund services;
- Global Blue machines;
- yellow fever vaccination services.
If you need to deal with a tax refund after your trip, knowing where Door 5 is can save you time.
7. Getting From Bogotá Airport to the City
Once you’ve cleared immigration, collected your luggage and exited the terminal, you have several transportation options.
Private transfer
For international visitors arriving for the first time, this is our preferred option. Your driver knows where to meet you, where to wait and how to get you to your hotel without having to figure everything out after a long flight. At Circling Colombia, transportation is part of how we look after the traveler, rather than simply a vehicle moving someone from point A to point B. Depending on the trip, travelers may have a standard private vehicle, a higher-category or luxury vehicle, or another transportation arrangement suited to the itinerary. And sometimes the journey doesn’t end in Bogotá. Some travelers land at El Dorado and immediately continue by road to another destination. If that means several more hours of travel after a long international flight, we may arrange something to eat or drink for the journey when appropriate. This isn’t something every traveler needs, and it isn’t part of every trip. But these are the kinds of details we pay attention to when we know what the traveler is facing after landing.
App-based transportation
Services such as Uber are widely used in Bogotá.
Pickup procedures at airports can change, so always follow the instructions in the app and confirm the meeting point with your driver.
Authorized airport taxis
El Dorado also has an authorized airport taxi service.
If you choose a taxi, make sure you’re using the official service rather than accepting an unsolicited offer from someone approaching you inside or immediately outside the arrivals area.
Avoid unsolicited transportation offers
As you leave international arrivals, you may encounter people offering transportation.
We do not recommend accepting these offers.
You don’t necessarily know who the operator is, what vehicle you’ll receive or what price you’ll eventually be charged.
Instead, use:
- a pre-booked private transfer;
- an established app-based transportation service;
- the official airport taxi service.
What about public transportation?
Bogotá has an extensive public transportation system, but we don’t generally recommend using it immediately after an international flight if you’re unfamiliar with the city. You’ll need to understand the ticketing system, have the appropriate transportation card and navigate the system while carrying your luggage. During Bogotá’s busiest traffic periods, public transportation can also become considerably more complicated for first-time visitors. It’s certainly useful once you understand the city. But after a long international flight with several pieces of luggage, there are easier options.
8. Domestic Flights, Connections & the Puente Aéreo
If you’re continuing your journey within Colombia, pay attention to your airline and departure location. Domestic flights are not necessarily handled from exactly the same area of the airport. Avianca has its own designated access area, while airlines such as LATAM use other sections of the terminal. Some domestic operations, including airlines such as Clic and SATENA, may operate through the Puente Aéreo, located before the main El Dorado airport complex.
The Puente Aéreo is considerably farther from the main terminal. Walking between the main terminal and the Puente Aéreo can take approximately 20 to 30 minutes, depending on your pace and exactly where you’re going. Using airport transportation can make the journey considerably faster. If you have a domestic connection, check your airline and departure location before heading to the airport. Don’t assume that because your flight is from Bogotá, you simply need to go to the main terminal.
9. Long Layovers, Money & Other Airport Services
Can you leave Bogotá Airport during a long layover?
A long layover in Bogotá can potentially become an opportunity to see part of the city. El Dorado has luggage-storage services that can be useful for travelers with a long connection who don’t want to carry their bags around Bogotá. Once your luggage is safely stored, you can take transportation into the city.
How far is Bogotá’s historic center?
Under favorable traffic conditions, the historic center can be approximately 35 minutes by car from the airport.
But there is an important warning:
Bogotá traffic can change this dramatically.
A journey that takes 35 minutes under favorable conditions can take substantially longer during peak traffic. For that reason, we would only recommend leaving the airport during a layover when you have enough time to comfortably absorb delays. Don’t plan your entire layover around a 35-minute journey in each direction.
Global Blue and tax refunds
Travelers who are eligible for a tax refund can find Global Blue machines at El Dorado. The automated process can be remarkably quick when all the documentation is in order. In many cases, the machine allows travelers to complete the process in just a few minutes. Sometimes, however, travelers are directed to an office for additional processing. In our experience, even the in-person process is generally efficient.
Keep your invoices and required documentation organized before starting the process.
How early should you arrive at Bogotá Airport?
For international departures, three hours is the conservative recommendation. Under normal circumstances, two and a half hours can be sufficient, while some Business Class travelers may be comfortable with approximately two hours. However, Bogotá traffic can be unpredictable. Heavy traffic, protests, road closures, accidents or airport disruptions can all affect the time it takes to reach El Dorado. If you have an important international departure, give yourself more time rather than less.
10. Local Tips: What We Wish Every Traveler Knew
After regularly welcoming international travelers at El Dorado, these are some of the things we wish every first-time visitor knew before landing in Bogotá.
1. Don’t assume immigration will take 20 minutes.
It might be quick. It might take an hour. During a particularly busy arrival period, it can take longer.
2. Canadians should look for their dedicated immigration line.
Don’t automatically join the general international queue.
3. A biometric passport doesn’t mean you can automatically use the biometric gates.
Follow the immigration process applicable to foreign visitors.
4. Connect to the airport Wi-Fi.
It is free and can allow you to contact your hotel, driver or local host as soon as you land.
5. Don’t exchange a large amount of money at the airport.
An ATM can be a more practical way to obtain your first Colombian pesos.
6. Don’t accept the first transportation offer you receive.
Use a pre-arranged transfer, an app-based service or the official airport taxi service.
7. Know your meeting point.
If someone is picking you up, confirm the exact door before leaving the terminal.
8. Keep your driver’s phone number.
If you’ve arranged private transportation, having the person’s direct contact information can make the arrival much easier.
9. Door 5 is worth remembering.
It is an important reference point for several international traveler services.
10. Don’t assume every domestic flight leaves from exactly the same place.
Check your airline and terminal information carefully, particularly if you’re using the Puente Aéreo.
11. Don’t assume everyone speaks English.
A little Spanish and a translation app can make your first few hours much easier.
12. Don’t underestimate Bogotá traffic.
A short journey on a map can take much longer during busy periods.
13. El Dorado is probably more efficient than you expect.
One of the things we particularly appreciate about the airport is how efficiently passengers can move through the main terminal despite the volume of people passing through it.
Final Thoughts
Entering Colombia doesn’t have to be complicated.
The formal requirements are relatively straightforward for many travelers from the United States, Canada and Europe. The bigger challenge is often knowing what happens after the plane lands.
Understanding how immigration works, knowing where to meet your driver, connecting to the airport Wi-Fi, avoiding unnecessary currency-exchange fees and allowing enough time for Bogotá traffic can make the difference between a stressful arrival and a smooth one.
